What is a VPN Connection & Why Do You Need One?

A VPN, known as a Virtual Private Network, is an ideal medium to hide internet traffic over the public internet connection. It masks the IP address to keep your online activities virtually untraceable. VPN helps establish encrypted and secure connections that ensure better privacy protection online.

Benefits of Setting Up a VPN Connection

Simply put, setting up a VPN safeguards your privacy and security over the internet when you are accessing an email, shopping online, or making a financial transaction. They prevent your data from malware attacks and other security threats that affect your mac speed or slow down Windows performance.

Let’s explore other benefits of establishing a VPN connection.

  • Protect Personal Information

When you download an app or browse the web for day-to-day tasks, the websites or apps you visit to gather your information and track your internet activity. A VPN encrypts your IP address which restricts the web browsers or websites to visit your connection details.

  • Prevent Bandwidth Throttling

Slower internet connection while visiting several websites can be the result of bandwidth throttling. By connecting to a VPN connection, you can encrypt your computer’s or phone’s internet traffic. This will prevent others from viewing and stealing any information.

  • Avoid Data Throttling

When you reach a stipulated internet usage limit, the carriers use data throttling to slow down data access. It helps regulate network traffic and minimizes bandwidth congestion. With a VPN, you can access high-speed internet beyond any data cap or other limitations.

  • View Region-Blocked Services

Some virtual private networks allow you to view geo-restricted streaming services such as Netflix or YouTube by changing your IP address. It won’t let the providers know your location. Keep in mind that several countries have penalties for using VPNs, and users can be punished for finding any breach of rules.

For business users, VPN can provide access to the internet to multiple users altogether by running the essential apps in the cloud. Employees can run the VPN using their account credentials to connect to the server that is storing these key applications.

How to Select a VPN?

The VPN you select depends on your specific needs and budget. You may find free and paid virtual private networks available in bulk, but the former may not offer all the features you want to access. Several VPN providers offer similar services in terms of speed, performance, server location, and encryption protocols.

The similarity in offerings may not affect you much, but any differences can be of considerable importance as they may decide the kind of services they provide. Don’t forget to take note of everything before purchasing a plan.

Let’s have a look at some significant uses of VPNs and how you can select one.

  • Streaming Content

Most VPN service providers claim that they offer access to live streaming sites such as Amazing Prime or Netflix, but not all of them actually do. Before you make a final purchase, make sure to go through the reviews or opt for a VPN with a money-back policy or ask for a trial version.

Several services don’t usually work as promised, so pre-paid plans can be frustrating sometimes. Trial versions will give you more transparency over the services and help you find the right one.

  • Web Browsing

The aim of the VPN services is to hide internet activities by encrypting the IP address and geo-location. Not all VPNs offer the same strategy and guidelines to safeguard your device and data. It is advised to take some time to identify and understand different options and their benefits to pick an appropriate one that best suits your requirements.

  • Torrenting

Most of the users use a VPN connection for torrenting purposes and therefore, the service providers advertise themselves as the best for torrenting. To torrent successfully, you will need access to multiple dedicated P2P servers, AES-256 bit encryption, unlimited bandwidth, and legally-unbounded operating terms.

Make sure to read the VPN service terms and conditions to understand if they meet your country’s torrenting guidelines. This will help you ensure that you are not violating any user policies related to torrenting.
